Community priority-focused events
Throughout the period of the project, the project team collaborated with community stakeholders and agencies to design and implement disaster preparedness themed events that responded to the community’s three emerging priorities - information & education, communication and community connectedness .
Tales as Old as Time
Community priorities focus: Information and education, community connectedness, The Disaster Preparedness Project and the Eden Killer Whale Museum supported the Australian Red Cross to host the Tales As Old As Time event at the Hotel Australasia in Eden on the evening of 23 June 2023. The event was emceed by the ABC’s Paul West who facilitated conversations and storytelling between seven panelists; all long-term residents of Eden and surrounds. |
Topics included the sleeper cutting boom, the boom and bust cycles of the local fishing industry, the 1952 bushfires, the town’s development, Eden’s role in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race disaster and tales from the onshore whaling industry.
Tales As Old As Time is a format developed by the Red Cross as part of its Recovery and Resilience program. It aims to bring people together, build social connections and share stories and knowledge, including about past disasters.
It’s an opportunity to strengthen and build existing relationships, create new associations, and enhance community resilience by connecting people to each other and to the place in which they live.
An audio recording of the event has been uploaded to the National Library of Australia's free online research portal, Trove.
